Frequently asked Questions
An Ijāzah is a formal scholarly authorisation granted to someone who recites the entire Qurʾān from memory, accurately and fluently, to a qualified teacher. It confirms that the student has mastered the recitation and is permitted to transmit it further according to the recognised chain of narration.
Only students who have fully memorised the Qurʾān and meet the required standards of precision, consistency, and adab in recitation may qualify for an ijāzah. This is a long-standing scholarly condition preserved throughout Islamic tradition.
A Supervised Khatm refers to the complete recitation of the Qurʾān from beginning to end, typically read from the muṣḥaf under the guidance of a qualified teacher. The focus is on correct pronunciation, tajwīd, and consistency, ensuring the student’s recitation is sound and reliable.
A non-ḥāfiẓah does not receive an ijāzah. However, they complete a fully supervised khatm, along with structured tajwīd study, and gain the confidence and satisfaction of knowing their recitation is correct and refined.
Absolutely. Completing a khatm with proper tajwīd and teacher correction is a significant scholarly and spiritual achievement. It strengthens one’s relationship with the Qurʾān and builds a strong foundation for lifelong recitation and further study.
